Fastener Weight & Count Chart

A free reference from Tesco Steel & Engineering for estimating the weight per piece, weight per 100 pieces and approximate pieces per kilogram of common hex bolts, nuts and washers in metric (M) and BSW (inch) sizes. It also gives the simple calculation formula and material-density multipliers so you can convert a carbon-steel value to stainless steel, brass, aluminium, titanium and more — useful for ordering, packing and freight estimates. All values are approximate, for plain steel of standard pattern.

What Is a Fastener Weight & Count Chart?

Definition: A fastener weight & count chart is a quick-reference table that links a fastener's nominal size and length to its weight — given as weight per piece (grams), weight per 100 pieces (kilograms) and approximate pieces per kilogram. It lets you convert instantly between a count of fasteners and a total weight, which is essential for purchasing, kitting, packing and freight. The figures below are approximate values for plain carbon-steel fasteners of standard pattern; use the material multipliers to estimate other alloys.

How Fastener Weight & Piece Count Are Calculated

Every fastener's weight is its volume times the material density. Steel is about 7.85 g/cm³. From the weight of a single piece you can derive the other two figures with simple arithmetic:

Pieces per kg = 1000 ÷ weight per piece (g)
Weight per 100 pieces (kg) = weight per piece (g) ÷ 10
Other-material weight = steel weight × density multiplier

Example: an M10 hex nut weighing about 10 g each gives 1000 ÷ 10 = ~100 nuts per kg and 10 ÷ 10 = 1.0 kg per 100 nuts. In stainless steel (multiplier ~1.02) the same nut is ~10.2 g; in aluminium (~0.34) it is ~3.4 g.

Material-Density Multipliers

Charts are usually tabulated for carbon steel. To estimate the same fastener in another material, multiply the steel weight by the ratio below (carbon steel = 1.00).

MaterialDensity (g/cm³)Multiplier (vs carbon steel)
Carbon / MS steel7.851.00 (baseline)

Allen CSK (Countersunk) Head Screws to IS 6761:1994 / ISO 10642 (DIN 7991) — Estimated Weight per 100 Pieces (kg)

Allen countersunk (CSK) head screws have a flat 90° countersunk head with an internal hexagon drive, letting the head sit flush with the mating surface. They are produced to IS 6761:1994, ISO 10642 and the equivalent DIN 7991 standards. The chart below gives indicative weights in kilograms per 100 screws for diameters M3 through M24 and lengths from 8 mm to 100 mm; a dash marks a non-standard diameter–length combination. Note that a flush CSK head weighs less than the cylindrical head of a cap screw of the same size, so do not interchange the two charts when estimating despatch weight.

Low Head Socket Screws DIN 6912 / DIN 7984 — Estimated Weight per 100 Pieces (kg)

Low head socket screws are made to DIN 6912 (with pilot recess) and DIN 7984, with a cylindrical head roughly two-thirds the height of a standard DIN 912 cap screw — the choice where vertical clearance above the joint is restricted. The matrix below gives indicative weights in kilograms per 100 screws for diameters M4 through M36 and lengths from 10 mm to 200 mm. A dash marks a non-standard diameter–length combination. The shallower head also means a reduced hex socket, so use the correct key size to avoid rounding the drive.

Hexagonal Socket Set Screws (Grub Screws) with Knurled Cup Point to IS 6094 (Part 4):2006 / ISO 4029:2003 (DIN 916) — Estimated Weight per 100 Pieces (kg)

Socket set screws — commonly called grub screws — are headless fasteners threaded along their full length and driven by an internal hexagon, used to lock pulleys, couplings, collars and gears onto shafts. The knurled cup point variant covered here bites into the shaft for extra holding power and is standardised in IS 6094 (Part 4):2006, ISO 4029:2003 and the equivalent DIN 916. With no head, these are the lightest fasteners on this page: the chart gives indicative weights in kilograms per 100 pieces for M1.6 through M24 and lengths from 2 mm to 60 mm. A dash marks a non-standard diameter–length combination.

Round Head Rivets — Estimated Weight per 100 Pieces (kg)

Round head (snap head) rivets are solid permanent fasteners with a domed head, hot- or cold-driven in structural steelwork, tanks, railway wagons and general fabrication. The chart below gives indicative weights in kilograms per 100 rivets for shank diameters 1/4″ through 1″ and lengths from 1/2″ to 4″, measured under the head. A dash marks a non-standard diameter–length combination. Remember to allow extra shank length for forming the closing head — typically about 1.5 times the diameter.

Square Head Set Screws (UNC) — Estimated Weight per 100 Pieces (kg)

Square head set screws carry an external square head that takes a spanner, giving far more driving torque than an internal hex — the traditional choice for tool-post clamping, machinery mounts and agricultural equipment. The chart below covers inch-series UNC (Unified National Coarse) threads in diameters 1/4″ through 1/2″ and lengths from 1/2″ to 2.1/2″, with indicative weights in kilograms per 100 pieces. A dash marks a non-standard diameter–length combination.

Fully Threaded Rods (DIN 975) — Estimated Weight per Metre (kg)

Fully threaded rods (studding) to DIN 975 are continuously threaded bars normally stocked in 1, 2 and 3 metre lengths, cut to size on site for hangers, anchor fixings, U-bolt fabrication and flange stud blanks. Unlike the piece-count charts above, threaded rod is sold by length, so this table lists the estimated weight per metre in kilograms for both metric coarse sizes (M2–M48) and inch UNC sizes (1/4″–2″) side by side. Multiply by the stock length, then by the number of rods, to estimate total despatch weight.

Fully Threaded UNC (ASTM) Studs — Estimated Weight in kg per Piece

Fully threaded stud bolts to ASTM specifications (typically A193 B7 / B8 / B16 with A194 nuts) are the standard bolting for ASME B16.5 and B16.47 flange joints. The chart below lists the estimated weight of one stud in kilograms — note this is per piece, not per 100 — for UNC / 8-UN diameters 1/2″ through 2″ and stud lengths from 50 mm to 300 mm. Multiply by the bolt-hole count of your flange and add the nut weight from the nut chart above to estimate joint bolting weight.

Machine Screws, CSK Head, IS 1365:2005 — Estimated Weight per 100 Pieces (kg)

Countersunk (CSK) head machine screws to IS 1365:2005 have a flat 90° slotted head that finishes flush with the work surface — the companion to the cheese head chart above wherever a snag-free face is needed. Like that chart, this matrix runs diameter down the side and length (mm) across the top: indicative weights in kilograms per 100 screws for M1.6 through M20 in lengths from 2 mm to 100 mm. A dash marks a non-standard diameter–length combination; the flush head also makes each size slightly lighter than its cheese head equivalent.

Split Pins (Cotter Pins) to DIN 94 / IS 549:2005 — Estimated Weight per 1000 Pieces (kg)

Split pins (cotter pins) to DIN 94 and IS 549:2005 are bent half-round wire pins pushed through a drilled bolt or clevis and spread open to lock castle and slotted nuts against rotation. Being light items, this chart is quoted per 1000 pieces — not per 100 like the screw charts above. Nominal diameters M1 through M13 refer to the pin hole size; lengths run 6 mm to 140 mm, measured from under the head to the tip of the shorter prong. A dash marks a non-standard diameter–length combination.

Circlips — External (DIN 471), Internal (DIN 472) & E-Clips (DIN 6799) — Estimated Weight per 1000 Pieces (kg)

Circlips (retaining rings / snap rings) of spring steel locate bearings, gears and pins axially in a groove. External circlips to DIN 471 clip onto a shaft, internal circlips to DIN 472 spring into a housing bore, and E-clips to DIN 6799 slide sideways into a shaft groove where there is no room to feed a ring over the end. Like the split pin chart, weights here are quoted per 1000 pieces. The first diameter column covers shaft / bore sizes 3 mm to 300 mm for DIN 471 / 472; the separate right-hand pair lists E-clip shaft sizes 0.8 mm to 30 mm. A dash marks a size not produced in that style.

Dowel Pins (Solid) DIN 6325 — Estimated Weight per 1000 Pieces (kg)

Solid dowel pins to DIN 6325 are hardened, precision-ground cylindrical pins (typically m6 tolerance) pressed into reamed holes to locate mating parts — jigs, fixtures, dies and machine assemblies — with repeatable accuracy. Like the split pin and circlip charts, weights are quoted per 1000 pieces: nominal diameters 0.8 mm to 20 mm and lengths from 2 mm to 120 mm. A dash marks a non-standard diameter–length combination.

Spring Dowel Pins (Roll Pins) DIN 1481 — Estimated Weight per 1000 Pieces (kg)

Spring dowel pins (slotted spring pins / roll pins) to DIN 1481 / ISO 8752 are rolled from spring steel strip with a full-length slot, so they compress on insertion and grip a plain drilled hole by radial spring force — no reaming needed, unlike the solid DIN 6325 dowels above. Being hollow they are also lighter size for size. Weights are quoted per 1000 pieces: nominal diameters 1 mm to 20 mm and lengths from 4 mm to 180 mm. A dash marks a non-standard diameter–length combination.

Eye Bolts (Lifting Hooks) DIN 580 & Eye Nuts DIN 582 — Estimated Weight per Piece (kg)

Forged lifting eye bolts to DIN 580 and their mating eye nuts to DIN 582 are the standard screwed lifting points for motors, gearboxes, dies, valves and machine housings — the ring takes a hook or shackle directly. Note these are heavy forged items, so this chart is quoted per piece (not per 100 or per 1000) for thread sizes M8 through M100. Always check the rated working load limit for the lifting angle before use; weight alone is no indication of capacity.

Hex Screw Plugs DIN 910 — Estimated Weight per 1000 Pieces (kg)

Hexagon head screw plugs to DIN 910 are solid threaded plugs with a fine-pitch metric thread and a sealing collar, used to close oil-fill, drain and inspection ports on gearboxes, pumps, compressors and hydraulic blocks — usually with a sealing ring under the collar. Weights below are quoted per 1000 pieces. Where a size is produced in two pitches (M20, M27, M30), both thread designations are shown against the same weight; a dash means that pitch variant is not listed.

Self-Tapping Screws, Pan Phillips Head, DIN 7981 / ISO 7049 — Estimated Weight per 1000 Pieces (kg)

Pan head self-tapping screws with a Phillips cross recess to DIN 7981 / ISO 7049 cut their own thread in sheet metal, ducting, enclosures and plastic mouldings — only a pilot hole is needed, no nut or tapped thread. The hardened case-carburised tapping thread is coarser than a machine-screw thread, which is why the diameter series (2.2, 2.9, 3.5, 3.9, 4.2, 4.8, 5.5, 6.3) differs from the standard metric range. Weights below are quoted per 1000 pieces for lengths from 4.5 mm to 38 mm; a dash marks a non-standard diameter–length combination.

Self-Tapping Screws, CSK Phillips Head, DIN 7982 / ISO 7050 — Estimated Weight per 1000 Pieces (kg)

The countersunk companion to the DIN 7981 pan head tapping screw above: a flat 90° Phillips-recessed head to DIN 7982 / ISO 7050 that finishes flush in dimpled or countersunk sheet metal, panels and trim. The diameter series and length range are the same as the pan head chart, and weights are again per 1000 pieces — slightly lighter size for size because of the flush head. A dash marks a non-standard diameter–length combination.

Estimating a Full Bolt-Nut-Washer Set

For flanged joints and structural connections it helps to weigh the complete set. Add the bolt, nut(s) and washer(s):

Example setBolt (g)Nut (g)Washers (g)Set total (g)Per 100 sets (kg)
M12 × 50, 1 nut, 2 washers~62~16~9~87~8.7
M16 × 60, 1 nut, 2 washers~145~33~18~196~19.6
M20 × 80, 1 nut, 2 washers~300~62~32~394~39.4

How to Use This Chart

1
Identify the fastener: note the type (hex bolt, nut, washer), thread system (metric M or BSW inch), diameter and — for bolts — length.
2
Read the value: find the row/column in the relevant table for weight per piece (g) or weight per 100 pieces (kg).
3
Convert count ↔ weight: use pieces per kg = 1000 ÷ weight per piece (g), or kg per 100 = weight per piece (g) ÷ 10.
4
Adjust for material: multiply by the density factor (e.g. ~1.02 stainless, ~0.34 aluminium) if not carbon steel.
5
Sum & verify: add bolt + nut + washer for a full set, multiply by quantity, and confirm against certified data for critical or commercial estimates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. How do you calculate the number of fasteners per kilogram?

Divide 1000 by the weight of one fastener in grams: pieces per kg = 1000 / (weight per piece in grams). For example, if one M10 hex nut weighs about 10 grams, then 1000 / 10 = about 100 nuts per kilogram. The figure is approximate because head style, thread length, tolerance and surface finish all vary the real weight.

Q2. How is the weight of a bolt calculated?

The weight of a bolt is estimated from its volume multiplied by the material density. For steel (about 7.85 g/cm³), a quick estimate adds the head volume to the shank volume: weight (g) = 7.85 × volume in cm³. Charts simplify this by tabulating the weight per piece (or per 100 pieces) against nominal diameter and length, which is faster than calculating each size by hand.

Q3. What is weight per 100 pieces for fasteners?

Weight per 100 pieces is the weight in kilograms of 100 identical fasteners. It is a common bulk-ordering and packing figure: weight per 100 pieces (kg) = weight per piece (grams) / 10. So a bolt weighing 9 grams each is about 0.90 kg per 100 pieces. Multiply by the quantity in hundreds to estimate a consignment weight.

Q4. Why are fastener weights only approximate?

Tabulated fastener weights are approximate because the real weight depends on head type (hex, socket, flange), thread length (full vs half thread), pitch, chamfers, tolerance class, and any coating or plating. Charts give a representative value for plain steel of standard pattern; always confirm the actual weight from the manufacturer's drawing or a sample weighing for critical estimates.

Q5. How do I convert a steel fastener weight to stainless steel, brass or aluminium?

Multiply the carbon-steel weight by the density ratio of the new material. Using carbon steel (7.85 g/cm³) as 1.00: stainless steel is about 1.02, brass about 1.08, copper about 1.13, Monel about 1.12, titanium about 0.57 and aluminium about 0.34. For example, a stainless M12 bolt weighs roughly 2% more than the same steel bolt, while an aluminium one weighs only about a third.

Q6. Does thread length affect fastener weight?

Yes, but only slightly. A fully threaded bolt is marginally lighter than a half-threaded bolt of the same diameter and length because cutting the thread removes a little metal from the shank. For estimation the difference is usually small, so a single weight-per-length value is typically used; for precise consignment weights use the specific full-thread or half-thread figure.

Q7. How do I estimate the total weight of a bolt-nut-washer assembly?

Add the weight of each component: bolt + nut(s) + washer(s). For example, an M16 × 60 mm bolt (about 145 g) with one nut (about 33 g) and two washers (about 18 g) totals roughly 196 g per set, or about 19.6 kg per 100 sets. Charts that list each component separately make this addition quick.

Q8. What is the difference between metric (M) and BSW fastener sizes?

Metric (M) fasteners are sized by nominal diameter in millimetres with a metric thread pitch (e.g. M12), per IS 1363/1367 and ISO. BSW (British Standard Whitworth) fasteners are sized in inches with a Whitworth 55-degree thread (e.g. 1/2 inch), per BS 916. They are not interchangeable; weight charts list each system separately because diameters and thread forms differ.

Q9. Is this fastener weight chart suitable for ordering and freight estimates?

It is suitable for budgetary ordering, packing and freight estimates, where an approximate weight is acceptable. The pieces-per-kg and weight-per-100-pieces figures let you convert between count and weight quickly. For commercial invoicing or precise logistics, confirm the exact weight against the supplier's certified figures or a verified sample.

Q10. Does Tesco Steel & Engineering supply fasteners with flanges?

Tesco Steel & Engineering specialises in pipe flanges and can advise on matching stud bolts, nuts and gaskets for flanged joints to ASME B16.5 and B16.47. For flange bolting sizes and quantities use this chart together with our flange dimension and RTJ gasket charts, and contact our team for a complete flange, bolting and gasket package.

Disclaimer: The weights and piece counts on this page are approximate, for plain carbon-steel fasteners of standard pattern, and are provided by Tesco Steel & Engineering as a free estimating aid. Actual weight varies with head type, thread length, tolerance class, coating and material. For commercial or critical use, confirm weights against certified manufacturer data or a verified sample.
